Warwickshire Wildlife Trust is launching the brand new Malthouse Dormouse ale at its annual beer festival on 16th September. The new ale is inspired by the re-introduction of endangered hazel dormice earlier this year in a secret Warwickshire location.

The dormice, released into a woodland in June this year, have been exploring their new habitat and hopefully producing the next generation. Their release inspired Gavin Leach, Director of new Leamington Spa brewery, Windmill Hill to brew a new real ale. Malthouse Dormouse is a light, fruity ale, with hints of citrus and orange and will be available to sample for the first time at the beer festival.

Money raised from the sale of the brand new ale will support the work of Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.

Gavin Leach, Director of Windmill Hill said “I was inspired by the work Warwickshire Wildlife Trust were doing in the local area and wanted to give something back. After meeting with staff at Brandon Marsh Nature Centre we came up with the idea of putting a beer together for sale in pubs, whereby the charity would benefit from each cask sold – it seemed a great way to give back to the local area! The name and pump clip were inspired by the recent release of dormice into the local woodland. I really hope this beer can raise some funds for this great charity and help them to continue the work they undertake in the Warwickshire countryside.”

The festival is being held at Brandon Marsh Nature Centre, near Rugby and Coventry, and will showcase local produce and talent. Festival-goers will enjoy local real ales, cider and perry with live music, food, craft stalls and a free soft drink bar for drivers. Tickets are £5 per person and include a free Warwickshire Wildlife Trust beer tankard.

Other beers to try include What the Fox’s Hat and Grave Digger from Church End Brewery plus Wild Elder cider and Lonely Partridge perry from Hogan’s. Local modern country musician, James Edgar from Coventry, will be playing live at the event as the sun sets over the Brandon Marsh nature reserve.
