Wildlife Volunteers

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust runs exciting projects across Warwickshire and Solihull from protecting water voles to recording the oral history of our reserves. You can get involved!

There will be opportunities coming up to get involved with a range of new projects and make a difference to wildlife in your area.

Hedgehog Volunteers

Our Hedgehog Team is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. The Warwickshire Hedgehog Helpers group is being formed to help conserve local hedgehogs now and into the future. It intended that the group will continue as a subsidiary of the Warwickshire Mammal Group (WMG) when the Hedgehog Improvement Area projects in Solihull and Rugby come to an end in spring 2019.

Volunteers will be contributing directly to the conservation of our loveable spiky mammal whilst gaining great experience and new skills, with all training provided.

Volunteers can become involved in:

  • Torchlight surveying: Searching for hedgehogs in areas of green and residential space with a team during the night to determine hedgehog abundance.
  • Footprint tunnel surveying: Setting, checking, removing and maintaining hedgehog tunnels during the day to determine presence/absence of hedgehogs in areas of green space.
  • Community engagement: Attending events and engaging communities in hedgehog conservation.
  • Practical habitat management: Conducting practical tasks to improve habitat for hedgehogs and connect the landscape e.g. hedge planting, hedge laying.

The work will largely be undertaken in Solihull and Rugby, and a reasonable level of fitness is required for practical and survey work. Please note that the work does not involve the direct medical care or rehabilitation of hedgehogs.

If you are interested, please fill out this brief application form. All applications must be received by Thursday 12th April 2018.

You will need to attend an induction evening at Brandon Marsh Nature Centre on Friday 27th April 2018.

If you have any queries, please contact our Senior Hedgehog Officer at deborah.wright@wkwt.org.uk.

Peregrine Watch Volunteers (Coventry or Leamington)

If you have a particular passion or birds of prey then this is an opportunity to share your passion with others. We need your help to enable local people to view Peregrines and learn more about them. You will be the friendly face representing the Trust and helping us to conserve our birds of prey.

The type of activities you will be involved with includes:

• We are looking for volunteers who want to organize and operate a small gazebo that invites people to use telescopes to view Peregrines from a distance
• Inputting into displays and other interpretation materials and media
• Engaging with visitors, and chatting about the benefits of supporting the Wildlife Trusts
• Promoting the wider benefits of membership
