Nuclear Regulatory Review - Don’t turn the nature crisis into a catastrophe

As 2025 came to an end, we thanked everyone who took part in our campaign to reduce the risks the Planning and Infrastructure Bill (now an Act) posed to our wildlife and wild spaces.

We now focus our attention on the Nuclear Regulatory Review and the threat this poses to nature – and we need your help to stop it before it becomes policy. We need you to tell Ministers exactly what you think.

What is the Nuclear Regulatory Review and why are we worried?

The Nuclear Regulatory Review is a government-commissioned report which could quietly weaken the laws that protect nature across England. If the recommendations in the report become policy, the damage could be irreversible – this is why we need you to stand up for nature now.

  • The report states that nature protections result in unnecessary costs on developers, so is proposing these protections be weakened. This is simply not true.
  • The report suggests the government should allow development to go ahead even if it harms protected nature sites. We cannot allow this to happen and must protect these spaces.
  • The report also suggests that duties on public bodies to protect National Parks and National Landscapes could be removed.

These are some of the strongest safeguard’s nature currently has – we cannot allow them to be stripped away.

Should the above be allowed to happen, we will be in a situation where we will see:

  • A loss of our precious landscapes, local habitats and local places – damaging homes for wildlife.
  • A loss of economic stability which affects us all through the cost of living.
  • A loss of green space around us – this is detrimental for us all and our physical and mental health.

These protections are currently seen by some Government Ministers as unnecessary barriers to developers, instead of essential safeguards that help keep wildlife and the ecosystems we rely on safe.

We need to change this thinking, and we need your help to do it.

These recommendations are not policy yet and if enough of us speak up, there’s still time to make a change.
