Free Trees for Farmers scheme brings 108k trees to farmers

Since 2022 Warwickshire Wildlife Trust have partnered to support the Free Trees for Farmers scheme, which enables farmers to request as many trees as they need for their land.

By the beginning of 2026, the scheme will have given Warwickshire’s farmers access to 108,996 free trees, supporting on-farm habitats and wildlife.

Trees on farmland do so much for our landscape: they connect habitats together, create wildlife corridors, provide shade and shelter for livestock, lock up carbon, and help soils to absorb water.

Farmers are able to choose from a number of tailored ‘tree packs’, including hedgerow mixes, tree standards, fruit trees and woodland bundles, and they are designed to include Warwickshire’s rarer tree species, as well as provide the full blossom sequence to support pollinators. All trees are UK provenance, sourced through local trusted suppliers.

The scheme launched in 2021 through a partnership between Solihull Borough Council and the Woodland Trust, where free trees, stakes and guards were offered to members of the Arden Farm Wildlife Network. The initiative grew in 2022 when Warwick District Council joined, expanding the area that farmers were eligible to apply for free trees. Warwickshire Wildlife Trust became a partner at this point, stepping in to coordinate tree orders.

As the scheme grew to include Stratford District Council, Heart of England Forest joined in 2023 to assist in project facilitation through their ‘Trees Call to Action Project’ (TCAP). This continued until 2025 when scheme organisation moved fully in-house at Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.

The scheme now covers four districts; Solihull Borough, Warwick District, Stratford District and Rugby Borough, with thanks to their respective Councils.

Invitations to apply are sent out to Warwickshire’s Sustainable Farming groups in the spring, with tree packs prepared for select collection dates through the winter.
