Creating Wildlife-Friendly Allotments in Attleborough

Creating Wildlife-Friendly Allotments in Attleborough

David Beesley

Laura was inspired to create a wildlife-friendly area at her local allotments in Attleborough, Nuneaton following a visit she made in summer 2024.

Since then, she has been working tirelessly in collaboration with other allotmenteers to make her dream come true. This is her inspirational story told in her own words:

In August 2024 I ventured into Aberdeen Road Allotments with a friend and was totally captivated by what I saw!

There was so much activity going on everywhere. I followed the vibrant colours and sweet aromas as I wandered around chatting to the gardeners.

When I reached the farthest corner under the large oak tree, I was told it used to be the wildlife corner. There was no colour. It looked quite unappealing to me, and I couldn't imagine any animals wanting to move in!

It seemed such a shame, that I volunteered to try and turn it back into a viable space for our local wildlife.

The first thing we decided was to clean and relocate the pond.

With a little help from Ian, Steve and Ralph (the dog). We created a multi-storey bug hotel.

Then we created a hibernaculum for small creatures and insects using piping for air circulation, covered with compost before sowing wildflower seeds.

There was an open day to raise funds for both the allotment association and the wildlife corner.

Over time, we will be adding more flowers to attract the birds and bees. Watch this space for bird feeders and nesting boxes. Hopefully, we will be introducing a re-homed hedgehog family when their accommodation is ready.
