Welcome to survey season 2019!
Survey Force provides volunteers with the opportunity to learn new survey skills, meet new people and explore nature in some of the best scenery across Warwickshire.
No experience is necessary as training will be provided at all sessions, but please bring identification guides if you have them. Our Survey Force team of volunteers is currently full, so unfortunately we do not have space for any new volunteers.
Sessions mostly run every other week on a Monday from April – October. However please note this year there is no Survey Force in May. Sessions run from 10am – 4pm unless otherwise stated.
Do I need to have any specialist surveying knowledge?
The answer is “no”. Survey Force comprises a group of volunteers led by our Senior Conservation Specialist. We are a mixed group in terms of survey knowledge. We work in small groups, using our memories and books for species identification, so don’t worry, you will be supported.
What do I wear / bring?
- Weather appropriate clothing and waterproofs. We usually advise on trousers rather than shorts to avoid scratches, thorns, bites and stings.
- Sturdy footwear.
- Sun cream and insect repellent.
- A drink and packed lunch.
- Flora ID guides if you have them
- Hand lens if you have them
- For those of you who enjoy a bit of luxury in their lives; a foldable chair.
What do you do with the data that you collect on Survey Force?
The data that we collect is primarily used by ourselves to monitor the way in which we manage our reserves. It can tell us if our practices are working or whether we need to consider changing our management. The data can, however, be used in countless other ways; for example media and marketing etc.
We do also share our data with the Warwickshire Biological Records Centre. For details as to how they use the data and who they share it with, please contact them. We may also get miscellaneous requests from others for use of the data, which we respond to on a case by case basis.
What you should know is that the information that you collect for the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust about the species on our reserves is hugely important and we couldn’t collect the amount of data that we do without our volunteers, so thank you.
